Matthew is best known as a bassist and a music engraver who has prepared music for major symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, and sheet music publishers around the globe. He has also earned film credits preparing music for studio sessions, and transcribes note-perfect music from audio/visual sources for all applications. His work is recognized for its precision, clarity, and deep understanding of musical intent, making him a trusted collaborator for composers and performers alike.
He is also known as a proficient multi-instrumentalist performing on electric and acoustic guitars, electric bass, lap steel, banjo, and ukulele live and in the studio and has performed with touring acts and theatre pit orchestras across Canada. Comfortable in a wide range of styles, he brings a dynamic and expressive approach to every performance. Whether on stage or in the studio, Matthew’s musicality and versatility consistently elevate the projects he’s part of.
Matthew studied at York University in Toronto where he obtained a degree in Music Theory & Composition specializing in contemporary composition, classical and jazz orchestration, and jazz theory and performance. He also studied contemporary guitar performance and music of the avant-garde. He is especially interested in contemporary guitar performance and has performed multiple times at the 21st Century Guitar international conference and the Montréal Contemporary Music Lab / Labo de musique contemporaine de Montréal. His academic and creative pursuits continue to inform his practice, inspiring a thoughtful and innovative approach to both performance and score preparation.
